Matthew Holden, P.E., LEED AP, President, Chief Executive Officer

For almost three decades Matt’s specialty — and passion — has been design and analysis of energy savings in HVAC and plant utilities.

Matthew Holden, P.E. and President of Sparhawk Group, has been involved in the energy auditing, design and construction of HVAC and utility systems for 27 years. His scope of experience includes the industrial, institutional, commercial and multi-family sectors.

Matt’s career has focused on total project management: overseeing design, budget, build, commission and proof of energy savings. His experience as a design-build contractor offers a unique perspective to ensure systems that are robust and easy to construct. His background as a general contractor, hiring and directing crews, is a unique qualification as an engineer.

Many of Matt’s projects have been “pay for-performance utility incentives” with payments based on measured energy savings. Documentation of energy savings is his forte. When Matt founded Sparhawk Group in 1990, he purchased an industrial data logger to document the base line of energy savings. This was pioneering work at the time, and assured Matt and Sparhawk clients that targeted energy savings would be realized.

Matt is a registered professional engineer in seven states. He is also a Certified Energy Manager, LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional), and Certified Building Commissioning Professional.

Matt received his Bachelors and Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa where his visionary design project on solar energy and ethanol fuel received academic honors and also served as the basis of state and federal grants to fund his master’s research. As a graduate student he was selected to visit the Department of Energy Research Laboratories witnessing the leading edge in wind energy, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic and efficient building envelopes.
